Outdoor Adventure Kids (OAK) Family Program


The 2022 Acadiana Young Naturalists/Outdoor Adventure Kids Program will be sponsored in part by a grant from the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area.

Adventures for the rest of 2022!

July 16th 9am till noon (optional afternoon activities at location)  “Thriving in the Wild” at Indian Bayou  Our expert will guide us through foraging and wildcrafting skills while we explore the shaded trails of Indian Bayou.
August 13th 9am till 2pm  Pine forest and Stream Habitats at Kisatchie National Forest   We will explore the Longleaf pine ecosystem with a hike. After a location change we will cool off in the streams dip and seine netting the hidden inhabitants of the water.
 September 10th 9am till noon (optional beach and lake play) Endangered woodpeckers and amazing insects of Indian Creek  We  hike through the forest and learn about the successful program to save a local bird then head to the large beach at the lake for picnic and swimming.
 October 22nd 9am till noon Leaf Identification at the Louisiana State Arboretum   We will get an introduction into how to identify the many trees around us from the fantastic staff in the Arboretum classroom.  Then take our new skills on a walk in the park.
 November 19th 9am till noon Whooping Cranes and migratory waterfowl at White Lake   Learn about the Whooping Crane reintroduction program and hike a wetland birding trail.
* December 10th (start time to be determined) Overnight campout at Atelier de la Nature   Come experience the wonders of the night at our program wrap up campout. We will have nature, art, food, and help to set up camping gear!
