As we’re writing this blog post, leaves aren’t changing here in South Louisiana. Temps are still flirting with 90 and we’re wondering if summer will never leave. But talk of a cold front coming this week has us hopeful that indeed temperatures will drop along with our leaves, although our evergreen trees will keep on being green.
But why do leaves change colors in fall before dropping to the ground? And why do only some trees lose their leaves while others do not?
Here’s a handy video that explains the chemical reaction that happens every fall within trees, and includes the differences between deciduous trees and conifers. If you’re a teacher, this makes for a handy explanation that’s colorful as well as educational.
